Did you know?
- $3,800 is the annual cost of food wasted by the average Australian family
- 33% of all food produced globally is lost or wasted every year
- 45% of root crops, fruit and vegetables produced globally is lost or wasted per year
- 25% of the food wasted globally could feed all 795 million undernourished people in the world
- 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions each year are due to food waste and loss
To combat these alarming global statistics Compass Group launched Stop Food Waste Day in 2017. It is now the largest single day of action in the fight against global food waste, raising awareness of the issue and encouraging the industry and consumers to reduce the amount of food thrown away.
The aims of Stop Food Waste Day
- Prevent global food waste at the source by storing food optimally, making use of every edible part of the ingredient and planning meals ahead of time.
- Inspire everyone – friends, colleagues, local communities – to reduce food waste and repurpose more.
- Repurpose food by giving a second life to ingredients that most commonly go to waste, or by redistributing surplus food to your local community.
