Food for thought: why what we eat at work is about more than nutrition

We talk a lot about nutrition when it comes to workplace dining, but at Restaurant Associates we know food plays a second, equally important role: an emotional one. Recent workplace research found that the overwhelming majority of people say what they eat directly affects their mood, focus and energy, not just their physical health.

Two jobs, one plate

This creates an interesting tension. On one hand, people genuinely want to eat well and feel their best. On the other, stress, tiredness and the pull of comfort food often get in the way, and that’s followed by guilt, which rarely leads anywhere productive.

The most useful shift isn’t pushing people toward flawless eating. It’s helping them see healthy eating as an ongoing journey, where the next good choice matters far more than any single ‘perfect’ one.

Borrowing from the wider food world

Outside the workplace, the broader food and drink industry is already leaning into this idea, with a wave of functional products designed to support sleep, focus, stress and mood, not just general nutrition. There’s a real opportunity for workplace catering to take cues from this shift, building menus that quietly support both the practical and emotional sides of a working day.

At Restaurant Associates, this is why we think about menus holistically, balancing genuine nourishment with the kind of food that simply makes people feel good, because at work, both matter.
