Melbourne Museum is an iconic, postmodern building located in the centre of the Carlton Gardens. Perched on the edge of the city, we’re surrounded by 64 acres of English oaks, plane trees, conifers and Moreton Bay figs. Amid all this greenery, Melbourne Museum cuts a sculptural figure opposite the World Heritage–listed Royal Exhibition Building and next door to Melbourne’s oldest suburb.
With eight main galleries, and temporary exhibition spaces over three levels, we’re the largest museum in the southern hemisphere—so there are plenty of spaces to choose from. And nearby trams and trains, plus a 900-bay onsite carpark, always make for a stress-free event.
No matter the occasion, we know that a great venue can truly make an event. From the soaring Main Foyer to the secluded North Terrace, we love transforming Melbourne Museum’s spaces to cater for events of all sizes, from 10 guests to 2,000.
While our dedicated theatre, Treetops setting and meeting hubs provide beautiful blank canvas options, the museum’s many collections and galleries open up really interesting possibilities. Cocktails with a blue whale skeleton? Dinner beside a 25-metre-tall forest? A Powerpoint presentation with Phar Lap? If you’re planning an unforgettable experience, we’re more than happy to help you explore all the options.
Lights, music, styling, catering … everyone approaches events in their own way. From weddings and cocktail parties to meetings and conferences, we know that events come to life in the details.
Restaurant Associates and Museum Spaces are here to provide flexible support — whether that means custom AV, a specialised approach to layout, or an after-dark colour-wash projected onto the Royal Exhibition Building.

Birrarung is set within Bunjilaka, a living cultural centre made up of several key gallery spaces for Victoria’s Indigenous community. It is no accident that the space curves like a river, as Birrarung is the Boonwurrung and Woi wurrung name for Yarra River. Birrarung has a hand-carved zinc wall and leads via double doors to an outdoor area known as Milarri Garden. Birrarung provides the perfect opportunity for guests to enjoy both a contemporary indoor venue and outdoor gardens. Your event can be combined with a private viewing of the First Peoples exhibition and a traditional Welcome to Country or Indigenous performance.
